Don't Let Snow Buildup Hit 6 Inches

As much as possible, grab your snowblower before the pileup hits 6 inches. Tackling a smaller amount of buildup is better for a few reasons.

First, the snowblower won't need to work as hard. This results in less wear and tear, which saves you money on repairs or replacements.

Second, it's easier to move the snow farther distances and clear away the area.

Third, you can build snow banks with lower heights.

Be Careful Where You Start Up the Snowblower

It's best to start up the machine somewhere outside. If you must turn it on indoors, choose a location that is well-ventilated.

Never Step Away From a Running Snowblower

It's unwise and unsafe to leave running equipment unattended - and that applies to snowblowers too. Even if you simply need to grab something, turn off the machine first before stepping away.

Only Refuel a Cold Snowblower

Adding fuel too soon after a snowblower is turned off can cause a host of problems, from damaging the equipment to starting a fire. If you run out of fuel, let the equipment fully cool down before you refuel.

Aim the Snowblower Strategically

There are many directions you don't want to point your snowblower.

Don't move the snow:

  • Towards people.
  • Towards houses.
  • Into the street where it could harm a passing car.
  • Into an area that you already cleared away.
  • In the path of a city snow plow since it could get pushed back onto your property.

Focus on moving the snow with a pathway in mind. Think about where the snow needs to be and the best approach for getting it there.

Don't Push the Snowblower

Trying to go too fast can clog the snowblower's chute. This can hurt the equipment and reduce its lifespan. Plus, it will take time to fix. Focus on a manageable and realistic pace instead.

Speed Up the Process

There are tactics to make the work easier and faster, including:

  • Blowing with the wind.
  • Operating the machine at full rpm and a lower ground speed.
  • Focusing on passes that are 1/3 to 1/2 the width of the machine.
