Before Operating an Excavator
Before you begin using the excavator, it's important to do an inspection and make sure the various parts are in good working order. It's much better to uncover a problem now than in the middle of operating an excavator. Check the fluids, brakes, operator controls, and so on.
It's also important to keep up with excavator maintenance. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations on when to replace parts, when to visit a service department, and so on. The better you maintain the excavator, the better your excavator operation experience will be.
While Operating an Excavator
Focus On Safe Driving
As you move around the work site, choose the route that has as flat of terrain as possible.
Make sure as well to keep the excavator bucket low to the ground. This helps keep the excavator stable and ensures that the bucket is not impeding visibility.
When you approach a turn, try to make multiple gradual changes rather than taking a sharp turn. Keep the excavator as steady as possible.
When you need to go up a slope, approach it vertically rather than diagonally. When you need to go down a slope, check that the excavator's bucket bottom is low and parallel to the ground.
Adapt to the Given Conditions
Work sites are not all going to be the same. Take the time to scope out your surroundings and identify obstacles. Avoid them as much as possible. If you have to travel through unpredictable terrain, lower your speed accordingly.
When the Work Day is Done
Once you have finished using the excavator, there are a few final steps to do.
First, pick the best spot to park the excavator. Seek out a level surface if possible. Remember to lower the bucket attachment to the ground as well.
Second, turn off the excavator properly. Start by turning off the auto-idle switch. Then let the engine run at half throttle without a load for a few minutes. This step helps cool the turbocharger down. Then, set the RPM to low idle and turn the engine off. Remember to lock up the excavator's cab as you leave.
