With so many types of plows available, it can be tough knowing what best suits your farm. Below we cover key information on the different plow categories. For more information or to shop plows for sale, contact the experts at Arnold's Inc.

The Chisel Plow

The Design:

  • Multiple metal shanks fixed on a frame.
  • The number of shanks and the size of the plow can vary.

The Benefits:

  • Results in minimal soil turnover.
  • Avoids disturbing the tile system that guides water runoff from the field.

The Ridge Plow

The Design:

  • Two wings mounted on a frame.
  • One wing that turns the soil to the right and one wing that turns the soil to the left, which raises the soil into a furrow.

The Benefits:

  • Creates broad beds and ridges, which is great for crops such as potatoes.
  • Creates open water furrows on a field.
  • Plow height is adjustable.

The Disc Plow

The Design:

  • Three or more concave discs that are individually mounted on the frame.
  • Discs are angled backwards, which allows the plow to reach greater depths.

The Benefits:

  • Helpful for difficult land such as dry soil, rocky areas, and shrub-filled land.
  • Reduced friction (due to the use of discs over blades), which is helpful on sticky soil.

Moldboard Plow

The Design:

  • Curved blades that are shaped like wings.

The Benefits:

  • Leaves no soil unturned.
  • Able to dig deep into the earth, create rows, turn the soil, and aerate the soil all at once.
  • Able to bury weeds, leftover crops, and fertilizer into the soil.

Subsoiling Plow

The Design:

  • Rake blades mounted on a frame.

The Benefits:

  • Improves water drainage in fields.
  • Improves subsoil health by making it easier for oxygen, fertilizer, and water to get deeper into the ground.
